MetaMask is one of the easiest and safest ways to interact with your Ethereum wallets. With MetaMask you have full control over your wallets and private keys. You can import wallets from other applications or use paper wallets. You can also export your private keys and mnemonic phrase (Seed Phrase). MetaMask can also store and display any other coins/tokens that live on the Ethereum blockchain. Here is a quick step by step guide on how to get started with MetaMask.
Make sure that you are currently using a Chrome Browser. Then click on the button below to open the MetaMask Chrome extension page. Click on “Add to Chrome” in the top right corner of the popup window, then confirm again on the notification popup.
Create a password to unlock your wallet. Anyone that knows this password has access to your digital assets. We suggest using a password that you don’t use for facebook or any other online accounts. Write your password down or even carve it into something (just not a body part, please). When you are done, click on “CREATE”.
You will now receive your recovery phrase. Again, if someone gets hold of this, they will have access to your digital assets. Write it down on a piece of paper (best practice is to write it down on its own piece of paper). You can also download the seed words as a file, but then save that file on a USB drive that has is password encrypted (or burn it onto a CD, maybe? I mean, when is the last time you saw a thief of hacker walking around with a CD-ROM. For extra measure, place the CD in a Nickelback case). When you are done, click on “I’ve copied it somewhere safe”.
Your new wallet address has now been created. Click on the three dots next to your account name. Here you can:
- Export your private key to use this account with any other wallet,
- View the account on Etherscan,
- Show the QR code of the account or
- Copy the address.
Now you probably want to copy the address and send some Ether to this account from an exchange or another wallet. Or if you have an Ether wallet already, see where to import it to MetaMask below.
By clicking on the little user icon in the top right, you can import any other Ethereum account you have the private key of. You can also create a new account here. If you do have more than one account, this is also where you will switch between them.
ALWAYS log out of your wallet when you are not using it. If someone does steal your PC or laptop, they will not have access to your digital assets. (Well unless you saved your seed words on your computer with the name “All my money is here” or even just “MetaMask”). You can log out of MetaMask by clicking on the three lines at the very top right corner and then clicking on “Log Out”
